Rachel Howard Biography
Rachel Howard, born in 1969 in Easington, County Durham, United Kingdom, is a distinguished British artist renowned for her profound engagement with abstract and figurative painting. Howard's upbringing on a farm in a rural part of England and her education at The Mount School, York, a Quaker institution, significantly influenced her artistic and philosophical outlook. Despite declaring herself an atheist, Howard acknowledges the lasting impact of Quakerism's contemplative nature on her work, underscoring a lifelong fascination with the questions and concerns raised by religion.
Howard's journey into the art world began with her studies at Goldsmith's College, where she graduated in 1991 with a degree in Fine Arts. It was during her time at Goldsmith's that Howard's path crossed with Damien Hirst, a meeting that would prove pivotal for her career. While waiting for a bus outside London’s Goldsmiths College, Howard was approached by Hirst, who offered to help carry her paintings. This chance encounter blossomed into a significant professional relationship; from 1992 to 1995, Howard worked as a studio assistant for Hirst, painting spots for his artworks. This period was crucial for Howard, allowing her to earn a living while dedicating time to develop her own artistic practice.
Howard's work is characterized by a meticulous exploration of the materiality of paint and the dynamics of gravity, precision, and chance. Her abstract paintings are known for their layered poured paint, creating depth through strong vertical and horizontal lines. This technique is also evident in her figurative works, where the physical subject and the paint on the canvas hold equal weight, often employing her signature method of gravitationally controlled poured paint.
Throughout her career, Howard has exhibited extensively across Europe and beyond, participating in numerous group exhibitions and solo shows. Her works have been displayed in prestigious venues such as the Imperial War Museum in London, Sala Pelaires in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, and the Ackland Art Museum in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Howard's art is part of several notable collections, including the Ackland Art Museum, Museum van Loon in Amsterdam, David Roberts Foundation in London, and the Goss-Michael Foundation in Dallas.
One of Howard's significant contributions to the art world is her engagement with themes of violence and human cruelty. Her exhibition "Paintings of Violence (Why I am not a mere Christian)" at MASS MoCA in 2018 marked her first U.S. solo museum show, where she explored the concept of violence not as a chaotic force but as a deliberate action with profound implications. This exhibition, along with her broader body of work, reflects Howard's deep interest in art history, literature, and the human condition.
Howard's artistic achievements have been recognized and celebrated in various publications and by art critics. Her work has been reviewed and featured in prominent outlets such as Time Out New York, The Big Issue, and Two Coats of Paint. Critics have lauded her ability to navigate the complexities of abstract and figurative painting, highlighting her unique approach to color, form, and composition.
Today, Rachel Howard continues to live and work in London and Gloucestershire, contributing significantly to contemporary art discourse. Her dedication to exploring the nuances of the human experience through painting cements her status as a pivotal figure in the British and international art scenes.
